The Learner will be able to:

  • Identify both neurobiological and environmental risk factors for delays in development.
  • Apply the basic pediatric neurodevelopmental principles that underlie the spectrum and continuum of developmental-behavioral diagnoses.
  • Recommend evidence-based psychopharmacological interventions for children with developmental disabilities, when indicated
  • Counsel families about the plethora of non-evidence-based interventions that are widely available, but despite their popularity, have not been evaluated as treatments for children with developmental disabilities in terms of either their safety or efficacy

Speaker Bio

Robert Voigt, MD is a developmental pediatrician and system medical director of the Michael R. Boh Centers for Child Development at Ochsner Childrens. He was previously Professor, Leopold L. Meyer Endowed Chair, and Director of the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital. His research, education, and advocacy have produced 107 peer-reviewed articles, two books edited, one book section edited, and 18 book chapters. Dr. Voigt has previously served as pediatric residency program director for the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and DBP fellowship program director at both the Mayo Clinic and Baylor College of Medicine. His educational mentorship was recognized by his induction into the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Hall of Fame in 2008, his receipt of the 2022 BCM Department of Pediatrics Arnold J. Rudolph Award for Lifetime Excellence in Education., and his receipt of the 2023 Jan Goddard-Finegold Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in Developmental Pediatrics Education. His research mentorship was nationally recognized by an Academic Pediatric Association Award for Outstanding Mentorship in 2011. Dr. Voigt has served as program chair and newsletter editor for the AAP’s Section on DBP, as chair of the DBP Subboard of the American Board of Pediatrics, as editor-in-chief of the first and second editions of the AAP textbook, Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and as a member of the Editorial Board for the journals Pediatrics and JDBP.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Trent is a Professor of Pediatrics, American Health, and Nursing at Johns Hopkins University, Director of the Division of Adolescent/ Young Adult Medicine, and the Senior Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is a Bloomberg Endowed Professor of American Health, an independent research scientist, and a clinician. She is the principal or key investigator on multiple research projects and training grants funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding agencies. A significant focus of Dr. Trent’s research and clinical interest has been on reducing adolescent and young adult sexual and reproductive health disparities. Her scientific portfolio includes over 160 academic publications, including over 100 peer-reviewed publications in pediatrics and adolescent health. She is also the Training Director for the NIH-funded Johns Hopkins Adolescent Reproductive Health T32 Training Program. Dr. Trent is a past President of the Society for Adolescent Health and served two terms as Chair of the Executive Committee for the Section on Adolescent Health within the American Academy of Pediatrics. Professional organizations and the lay press have recognized Dr. Trent for her work, and she has emerged as an important voice and forceful advocate for the health and well-being of young people and those who care for them.

Dr. Simpson serves as Section Chief for Adolescent Medicine and Chief Clinical Diversity Officer at Tulane and Adolescent Medicine Service Line Chief at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. She is a member-at-large on the Louisiana Chapter of AAP Board of Directors.

Dr. Rebecca Hook assumed the role of Director of Medical Services for DCFS in September 2023. Prior to her current role, she worked in Baton Rouge as a pediatric emergency medicine physician. In her new position she will be collaborating with health care partners to improve quality of care, implement new services, review policies, and provide education regarding medical issues in child welfare. She looks forward to working with health care providers across the state.

Jonathan Heiman, a board-certified general pediatrician, completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. Driven by his dedication to children’s health, he exclusively pursued pediatrics following his graduation. Over the years, he has served as a pediatric hospitalist and a general pediatrician in various clinical settings. Currently, he serves as the Chief Medical Officer for a single specialty group practice spanning 21 locations across 2 states, boasting over 40 providers. Additionally, Dr. Heiman has contributed his expertise as gratis faculty with the LSU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, where he mentored rural family medicine residents in Bogalusa, LA. His professional interests include evidence-based medicine, educational endeavors, healthcare equity, and advocating for marginalized communities.

Dr. Toni Gross received her training at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and completed her pediatric residency at LSU Health New Orleans. She was a fellow at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine and trained at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine (July 2024) and was elected to the National Association of EMS Physicians board of directors in 2020. She has been involved in national EMS for Children programs for more than a decade and currently serves as the Medical Director and Chair of the Advisory Board for Louisiana’s EMS for Children State Partnership program.

Madison is new to the Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program as the Health Communications Specialist. Her role is to spread knowledge and understanding of lead and lead poisoning in Louisiana in an effort to increase screening and testing rates. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Manhattan College in the Bronx, NY. She then continued her education in New Orleans receiving a Master of Public Health in Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences from Tulane University.

Jonathan has been involved with childhood lead poisoning prevention efforts in Louisiana for the past 7 years. Currently, he oversees the statewide program whose goal is to eliminate childhood lead poisoning through a comprehensive approach which includes data surveillance and management, increased screening and testing rates, public education, primary and secondary intervention services and policy reform. He is a graduate from the University of New Orleans with a focus on Health Promotion and has gained experience in both the public health and housing aspects of these efforts at the federal, state and local levels.

Dr. Dave Barrios is the Medical Director of the American Burn Association Verified Burn Center at Our Lady Of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, Louisiana. He has been a staff surgeon at the center since it first opened in 2009. Dr. Barrios completed his general surgical training at LSU in New Orleans in 2002 and is a retired military veteran having served in both the Army and Air Force.

She completed her fellowship training at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and prior to that her Residency at Tulane University. She also has experience working as Pediatric Emergency Department Phsyician and a Masters in Public Health. She has a specific interest in health equity research and improving access to quality care for patients with cancer and blood disorders.

She is very interested in the evaluation and management of patients with dysmorphic features, neurocutaneous disorders, global delays and autism spectrum disorders. She is also interested in the ethical implications of genetic testing and the impact testing has on a patient and their family.

Thiravat Choojitarom has been a general pediatrician for almost 30 years. He has held positions in the AAP in the Community Access to Child Health Programs (CATCH) including State chapter CATCH Facilitator and District 7 CATCH Facilitator. He has also been a member of the state Early Hearing detection and Intervention Council (EHDI). He trained at Tulane and studied culinary medicine at the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine and has lead classes at the center. He is a massive Disney fan and can be easily distracted by mentioning anything Disney-related.

Dr. Meghan Howell is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine, as well as a complex care pediatrician and director for the NICU Graduate Clinic based out of Children’s Hospital, New Orleans. Dr. Howell completed her medical degree and residency training, including a year as chief resident, at Tulane University School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. Her clinical and research interests is in the long-term care of medically complex infants and children, including those born premature, substance-exposed, or with other special healthcare considerations. She has served as site PI for two NIH-funded studies focused on neonatal opioid withdrawal, as well as several investigator initiated projects through her Perinatal Exposures and Child Health Lab at Tulane.

Dan Feiten M.D. FAAP is the Chief Medical Officer of Office Practicum, a pediatric-specific EHR. In 1992, He co-founded Greenwood Pediatrics, which grew to become a 26-provider office with 3 locations in Denver, Colorado. As a founder of RemedyConnect, he speaks nationally to physicians and medical organizations about digital media strategies around digital marketing, patient education and pediatric telehealth.

A 1983 graduate of the CU School of Medicine, he completed his residency and chief residency with UCHSC’s Department of Pediatrics. In 2022, Dr Feiten received the highest honor for a pediatrician in Colorado, the James E Strain award for Community Service. This award recognizes an academic or private pediatrician who has provided exceptional service and innovation locally and nationally. Approximately 30 of Colorado’s nearly 4,000 pediatricians have received this honor.

Rebecca Schaad has been working with pediatricians across the country for the past 17 years. She is passionate about helping pediatricians increase their online visibility and find solutions to better reach their communities 24/7. When not working, Rebecca can be found hiking the Colorado trails with her husband and 3 kids or snuggling with her goldendoodle reading a great book.

Susan J. Kressly, MD, FAAP, is the 2024 AAP President-Elect.

Dr Kressly is board certified in Pediatrics and Clinical Informatics, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and served her residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Dr. Kressly began practicing in the Doylestown area in 1990 and has been an involved member of the medical community since then. Her independent pediatric practice has been a recognized medical home since 2011.

Her dominant advocacy gene compels her to speak up for children and pediatricians in order to advance child health and the profession of pediatrics. Dr. Kressly believes that all children deserve access to a well-coordinated, patient centered medical home neighborhood, and that all pediatricians, including medical and surgical specialists, deserve sufficient resources, payment, and support to meet the needs of the patients and families they serve.

Dr. Kressly’s leadership journey has allowed her a broad range of experiences where she haves actively sought a wide variety of perspectives. She am an empowering leader, providing inspiration and opportunity for others to collaborate.

Brittany Andry is a board certified pediatrician and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. Her undergraduate studies were completed at LSU, followed by medical school at LSUHSC in Shreveport, and residency training at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. Brittany initially worked as a pediatric hospitalist while establishing an eating disorder program, before leading a medical team at a 50-bed pediatric eating disorder hospital. Her current endeavors include opening a feeding and eating disorder clinic in the New Orleans area.

Dr. Katie Queen is a pediatrician at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health rural clinic in Bogalusa, Louisiana and is the medical director of a pediatric multidisciplinary weight management clinic at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge. She is board certified in pediatrics and obesity medicine, and is also passionate about mental health, rural health, and food insecurity. She is currently the secretary-treasurer of the LA-AAP and the Louisiana Obesity Society, and serves on the Louisiana Children’s Cabinet for the state legislature. She is passionate about advocacy, and is working with Louisiana Medicaid to improve coverage of obesity care for children in Louisiana. She is an active member of the LA-AAP legislative committee and leads the LA-AAP committee on obesity and nutrition. Dr. Queen is also a clinician scientist, and is currently a junior investigator on the NIH funded ECHO ISPCTN (pediatric clinical trial network focusing on rural and underserved pediatric populations) and the medical principal investigator of a PCORI grant studying the optimal dose needed for obesity lifestyle counseling in a community setting. She serves as an AAP Faculty member for the Childhood Obesity in Rural Pediatric Care Project ECHO and the Louisiana provider to provider consultation line. In her free time, she enjoys time outdoors, music, yoga, cooking, gardening, travel, and spending time with her husband and three daughters in Covington, Louisiana.

Margot Anderson practices Pediatric Hospital Medicine and Pediatric Infectious Disease at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. Her interest in vaccine preventable diseases was honed during the years she worked in Laos, Eritrea, Liberia, and Malawi where she saw many children suffer from tetanus, rabies, and measles among other preventable illnesses. She is optimistic that the pediatric practitioners in Louisiana can continue to strengthen the health of our children by providing consistent access to and advocacy for this live-saving resource.

Dr. Adrienne Savant is a pediatric pulmonologist with clinical expertise in cystic fibrosis, pulmonary aspects of neuromuscular disease and general pediatric pulmonology. She has been in practice for over 20 years, with a recent relocation in 2020 to New Orleans where she is the Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at Tulane University and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.

Dr. Patrice Evers is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine. She is a primary care pediatrician and teaches medical students and residents in the combined Tulane/LSU academic clinic in Metairie as well as in the Lakeside Hospital newborn nursery.

She is Section Chief of General Pediatrics at Tulane as well as Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs and holds the Suzanne S. Schaeffer Chair in Primary Care at Tulane University School of Medicine. She serves as medical director at the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center and the New Orleans Juvenile Justice Intervention Center.

She is currently studying for certification in Correctional Medicine in order to provide high quality care to children who are incarcerated.

Dr Chalew is a board certified pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist with over 40 years of experience. He is a professor of pediatrics at the LSU School of Medicine. He has over 117 published scholarly articles in the field endocrinology and diabetes. His research interests focus on preventling complications of diabetes and mitigating disparities in outcome for youth with type 1 diabetes.

Monika Dietrich, MD is a Pediatric Infectious Disease physician at Tulane University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital New Orleans (CHNOLA). She sees Pediatric patients across all spectra of infectious disease and prevention, including immunosuppressed, HIV-positive and HIV-exposed, and travel patients, in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Dr. Dietrich‘s long-term, clinical translational research interests revolve around congenital and perinatal infections, and the interplay of maternal, fetal, and infant health.

Speaker Bio

Michael Carver is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist born and raised in Sandusky Ohio. He completed pediatric residency here at LSU and then did his fellowship training in pediatric gastroenterology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. His interests in medicine include nutrition with a special interest in short bowel syndrome and maximizing outcomes for this unique population. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with friends and families and travelling all over the world.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Pham is a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Her areas of interest include neurogastroeneterology/motility disorder, disorder of gut brain interaction, and nutrition. Dr. Pham is also interested in management of refractory constipation.

Dr. Amanda Glinky is a Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Specialist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Dr. Glinky is a member of the Children’s Hospital Aerodigestive Team. Dr. Glinky has a clinical interest in the treatment of chronic abdominal pain and disorders of the brain-gut interaction. She is a Junior Academician of the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders and has received training in clinical hypnosis.

Dr Christopher Foret is not only a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians but also a 2022 AAFP Leading Physician Wellness Scholar. He has given presentations to the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, the LSU family medicine residency and the ST Tammany medical staff concerning Physician Wellness. With fifty three percent of our physicians in the United States reporting some level of burnout, this is a major obstacle to efficient delivery of healthcare. Dr Foret will discuss the topic and present strategies to help mitigate the impact of this threat to the physician workforce.
